The city in Wisconsin and the avenue in Manhattan were both named for Madison in 1836, the year he died.

MUCKRAKER. Someone who searches out and makes public corruption by well-known officials, corporations, etc. The word quickly came to describe anyone who inquires into and publishes scandal and allegations of corruption among political and business leaders. The word was coined by Theodore Roosevelt in an April 15, 1906, speech condemning the activities of certain crusading journalists. Using imagery from John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress, he accused them of stirring up the muck of American society rather than raising their heads to see its heavenly crown of great advances in business and industry.
